Tiny Dancer has always loved art, and specifically, art supplies. Blue gets on coloring kicks and he loves variety. Motor has always loved painting, clay, coloring sheets and I have an exploding art cabinet to prove it. (Hope is too little for art right now, but she sure loves emptying our hundreds of markers and crayons one by one each day.) My Guy has really pretty impressive art skills. He can draw a dog with sidewalk chalk like a boss. My skill level rivals a second first grader.
The Crayon Man: The True Story of the Invention of Crayola Crayons by Natascha Biebow is fascinating! If you have an artist at home or someone who runs the other way when you mention ‘arts and crafts,’ this book is a must! The determination of Edwin Binney, the inventor of the crayon, is simply mind-blowing. (I used some of this story as a good lesson for one of the kiddos when they were getting frustrated when a Lego project wasn’t working out. Thank you, Crayola Man!)
I’ve always loved history. The sheer grit and will to simply get ahead in our country’s earlier days is equal parts heart-wrenching and inspiring. Edwin Binney was intelligent and entrepreneurial and also had the smarts to listen to others.
This man changed the way we look at art and I am so thankful for his ideas. As our my kiddos.
I had no clue that Crayola had these learning books (Crayola Concepts). Truly. I stumbled upon the Crayola book and one click led to another and I had a whole pile of these sweet books. Motor ‘read’ them by himself and felt the creative juices flowing immediately. Who knew these were out there?! These would make for fantastic gifts tied up with markers or crayons!
