Astronaut

Spaced Out! Space Books for Space Nuts and Beginners

Motor has loved all things space for as long as I can remember. Space birthday parties, space jammies, astronaut for Halloween, astronaut dress-up, space puzzles. The list goes on.

My MIL finds some really fun crafts and sent this for Motor. He got to work while I read aloud to him and Hope.

We have devoured every Neil Armstrong book possible. (Interestingly enough, Blue was assigned Neil Armstrong for his second grade spring research report and I learned even more about this hero. I, too, am loving this learning process!) I love that science and outer space interest him, and I’m happy to keep souring the interwebs for for reading material.

Here are some of our space finds that might please your space crowd too! (Mae, Sally, Neil, Apollo and other book reviews coming right up in another set of posts)

How to Catch a Star

How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers. Well, I’m going to completely admit my fangirl status of Oliver Jeffers’ work. His books are gold. He could write and illustrate my grocery list and I’d be salivating. This has such imagination. Gushing here.

Oliver Jeffers has an incredible website (take a look) where I found this activity. So cute!

Moon Babies by Karen Jameson is darling! Sweet ryhmes, extra sweet illustrations (so creative) and what a fantastic way to introduce outer space to our small ones. I will be adding the other works from both the author and the illustrator (Amy Hevron) to my wish lists. I just ordered this as a baby gift!

Roaring Rockets by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker has been in our house for a loooooong time. And there’s a reason why it keeps in circulation here. The short sentences are easy for our smalls but it’s also informative. The last page includes pics of special rocket parts which Motor loves to point out. He’s basically an astronaut after all.

Space Walk by Brian Biggs is a big yes please! This astronaut takes the reader on a little adventure in space and ground control sounds so much like what Mom or Dad. The illustrations are beautiful and fun! We have a lot of this author’s other books, too.

Zoo Zoom by Candace Ryan was a hit here because of the animals heading to space (cute) and the repeating text. This book caught both Motor and Hope’s attention. Some of these pics reminded me of the characters in Zootopia (love!).

There's No Place Like Space

There’s No Place Like Space by Tish Rabe is a must! Outer space newbies or know-it-alls alike would love this book! It moves quickly even though there are a lot of pages. It’s super informative and there’s a glossary and there’s suggested readings. Mic drop.

Jack Blasts Off

Jack Blasts Off by Mac Barnett is part of the A Jack Book series and this whole series is a ‘buy’ not ‘borrow’ suggestion. Strong suggestion. I love these books because I can whiz through them with Motor and we both love the illustrations. I love these books for Blue because the font is a little bigger and there is a repetition of words. Blue likes these books because Jack gets into all sorts of predicaments. There is a holiday book in the series coming out in October and I already pre-ordered it.

Pluto Gets the Call
Pluto Gets the Call

Pluto Gets the Call by Adam Rex is an 11 out of 10! Equal parts charming and darling as it is informative. This book gives the planets little personalities and I think it helped my Motor understand outer space in a better way. Saturn might be my favorite from this book!

Just for fun: I like the Teachers Pay Teachers website for seasonal crosswords or word searches, speech therapy supplements, bingo and so on. I found this preschool activity for Motor to do while we read a book recently. Cute, easy and free!
