After reading The Mystery of Mrs. Christie, I was in the mood for another mystery/thriller. I forgot how much I love a mind-screw kinda book. Tell me I’m not alone in this. Keep the lights on for The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins. This is the kind of book that will have you wondering who knows what, everyone has a finger pointed at them and you’re not sure how you feel this will end. A winner!
On Your Marks
Birmingham, Alabama houses a deliciously upscale, gated community where everyone belongs to the country club, everyone has the super nice cars and you have people to walk the family dog. Enter Jane. Current job as dog-walker and transplant to Birmingham by way of Arizona.
Jane doesn’t have the first world problems her clients suffer from. She grew up in foster homes. She has no one to call as a support. She’s running from a tricky past to put it lightly. So when she happens upon a neighborhood who all use her services, she claims this as a win. Nevermind that she also five-finger-discounts items from the owners houses on the regular. Jane feels she deserves those trinkets.
Get Set
Jane notices one house who hasn’t needed her dog-walking services. The same house that seems to be without a lady of the house. Jane is going to land that tuna and reel him in!
Eddie lost his wife, Bea, and her best friend (coincidentally a neighbor, too) months ago. Police couldn’t find the bodies and Eddie has forced the hands to issue Bea’s death certificate. So he’s technically single. And he has eyes for Jane.
Eddie and Jane fast-forward their relationship and get engaged. Jane has sunk her teeth into this meal ticket and can’t wait to become one of the neighborhood ‘girls.’ However, there have been some new leads on the missing wives. And the best friend’s body is found – with head trauma.
What really happened the night the two women went missing? What does Eddie know that he isn’t sharing with Jane? Who is really the master of manipulation of the group?
Go!
Eyes are focused Eddie because he knows something. Eyes are focused on the best friend’s husband. While Jane is a master of deception and manipulation, she can’t help but feel like she’s the one being man-handled.
And there are some mysterious things happening in the house…
A Bedtime Thriller
The Wife Upstairs is scary enough where I had to keep reading to make myself calm down. And curl into My Guy a little bit tighter. And count my blessings that I have normal neighbors. 😊
