I don’t want the gore or the spider decorations. I’m talking pumpkins and ghourds and apple picking and baking and all things cozy. I’m down with a whodunit as long as it’s got the complexity of a Paw Patrol episode and not CSI New York. If you’ve come looking for a Stephen King-ish list of book reccos, I am of no help. Here are some fall books to get you in the fall season spirit!
Here are some other books I shared in a previous post!
Littles:
Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht is so gorgeous! The wording flows and rhymes. The illustrations are seasonal, but not spooky for little ones. Diversity! And the feel of the paper is a freaking delight. Trust me on this one. Get your paws on the paper.
The Great Pumpkin Contest by Angie Rozelaar is just pumpkin-coated sweetness. These illustrations remind me so much of Richard Scary’s work…tell me I’m not alone on this. Adorbs!
Fall Leaves by Loretta Holland is so sweet! Not your typical illustrations, but oh so pretty! On each of the left side pages is a phrase in bold followed by an explanation of why that happens (genius). On the right side are beautiful illustrations. I read this to Hope with just the phrases and I read the whole book to Motor. Because, attention spans. 🙂
Leaves by David Ezra Stein is perrrrrrfect for littles! Not a ton of words, super delightful illustrations and introduces the concept of hibernation. I have read so many of David’s books and they are all such winners!
A Fall Ball for All by Jamie A. Swenson just feels light and cozy and magical. A true fall season book to get you excited about the colors and smells and sights. Both Motor and Hope liked this one!
Fall Weather Fun by Martha E. H. Rustad is exactly what Motor needed when we were talking about how to dress for fall (his go-to ‘outfit’ since March has been shorts. Nothing else. He’s going to have some strong feelings when the temps drop.) This would be an awesome book for folks doing e-learning at home, or just for fun!
The Very Best Pumpkin by Mark Kimball Moulton is a fall delight! Gahhhh, I love these illustrations! This is not just about growing pumpkins but developing a friendship, too. I adore this book and the super sweet font they used. I’m a sucker for a great font.
Apples for Little Fox by Ekaterina Trukhan is a pint-sized mystery when Fox’s beloved apples go missing. Who can resist a book-loving fox who wears a jaunty little hat?! Adorbs.
Emerging Reader:
Flat Stanley and the Missing Pumpkins by Jeff Brown is a perfect seasonal reader with a tiiiiiiiny bit of whodunit mixed in. I love Flat Stanley books for Blue (we’ve read all the chapter books out loud together) and these readers are the perfect length for Motor.
Tween/YA:
Rainbow Rowell’s Pumpkin Heads is fan-freaking-tastic! Full disclosure, this was my first graphic novel that I read for me. The rest have been with Blue in the form of Captain Underpants, Dog Man and others. And I loved it! LOVED!
Josiah and Deja have worked at a fall-themed amusement park for years. Josiah has had a crush for that whole time on someone else, but hasn’t worked up the courage to chat with her. Deja decides this night, being their last ever as employees, will be the night Josiah talks to this gal.
My middle school and high school nerd self laghed and kinda cringed at the straight up truth with this:
And my favorite part of our non-relationship is the fact that she’s never rejected me.
I mean, tell me that isn’t the damn truth about every crush you’ve ever had! Pow! ✔
I would be legit plagiarizing if I were to share with you all the excerpts that made me say ‘I mean, RIGHT?!’ out loud. Don’t be a pumpkin head. Read this book.
Ok, help a sister out. Where are all the fall-ish books for adults that aren’t super creepy murder novels? I cannot. Like, where are the rom coms or the romance or a high school homecoming dance/football drama or the annnnnnnything that isn’t about people mysteriously dying on or around Halloween? Ideas please!
